Community Updates – December 30, 2024
-Currently, all Colorado dairies that previously tested positive are no longer under quarantine. There has been no recent updates on poultry (last reported flock on 12/17), and no commercial flocks are within control areas. The latest updates from CDA and the link for the weekly Situation Report for Colorado: https://ag.colorado.gov/animals/reportable-diseases/avian-influenza/colorado-hpai-response.
-Nationwide, HPAI is still going strong in CA, with dairies and poultry operations affected within the last week. No other states have detected HPAI in dairy cattle within the last week. Numerous states outside of CA have had both commercial and non-commercial flocks impacted in the month of December, with commercial flocks primarily in Midwest and Mississippi River states, and backyard flocks widely dispersed. For the latest status on both all species, visit https://www.aphis.usda.gov/livestock-poultry-disease/avian/avian-influenza/hpai-detections. I didn’t do the math, but there are several million birds affected just within the last month.
-HPAI in humans is getting some national news. Despite criticism, referring folks to the CDC is still the best source of information, along with information for backyard flock on our CDA website listed above. CDC has up to date information and recommendations here: https://www.cdc.gov/bird-flu/situation-summary/index.html.
Other interesting vet stuff:
Recent research shows that CWD can be taken up by plants and subsequently infect mice. The report on those projects can be found here: https://www.cidrap.umn.edu/chronic-wasting-disease/plants-can-take-cwd-causing-prions-soil-lab-what-happens-if-they-are-eaten#:~:text=They%20demonstrated%20that%20alfalfa%2C%20barley,tissues%20to%20develop%20prion%20disease.
