On Friday, October 13th, San Miguel Basin 4-H Coordinator, Annika Kristiansen led a group of 14 enthusiastic children in a STEM-based felting project at the Lone Cone Library in Norwood, CO. Participants first learned about the process of shearing sheep, washing and carding wool and preparing it for use. Then, buckets of warm, soapy water were brought out, tufts of already-processed wool passed around and kids engaged in a felting project under the guidance of Kristiansen. The beautiful, warm day allowed for the program to be held outdoors, where completed felt balls, “doll rugs” and other creative endeavors dried quickly under the strong sun. With newly-donated wool to be used for similar projects, Kristiansen is excited to bring the fun to other schools and libraries in the region in the coming months.
